The Pulptropolis Dispatch for September 6, 2026

I suggested last week I might have a release date for my novel Legion by this week’s update. I don’t. Sorry. I should know better by now than to create arbitrary self-imposed deadlines. They just make you look foolish when you miss them.

So what’s the holdup? I hit a roadblock. A section near the end that just isn’t reading the way I want it to read. And after banging my head against the wall for almost two weeks I finally took the advice I’m so quick to give to others.

When a writer thinks they’ve screwed something up, there’s a good chance they have. But it’s seldom in the place where they’re looking. The answer is go backwards. Almost invariably, the screwup happened earlier than you think. I proved it right once again.

But once found, you have to correct not only it, but everything it screwed up downstream. That’s what I’m working through now. It’s added a couple of weeks to the process, but it’s a much stronger story for it. I’m really excited for you to read it.

So I don’t have a release date for Legion to announce, but I do have an announcement. I'm guessing the big graphic at the top probably tipped you off to that, huh?

Next week’s newsletter will contain a link to my latest novella, Transcription: A Tale of Cosmic Horror. It’s yours free just for being a subscriber to this newsletter.

But that also means this is the last week you can download Fireflies for free. So if you haven’t gotten it yet, go do it now before it moves to Kindle Unlimited.

Lastly, I’ve got a little plug. Some of you may know I’m an alumnus of Amazon’s now departed Kindle Vella. Vella was where I first published fiction (I was publishing comic books for twenty-five years before that) and where the confidence to publish more blossomed. And while I don’t foresee a return to serial fiction for me, many of my friends from those Vella days are back at it over at https://lanternserials.com/

There looks to be some great stuff there. If serial fiction is your thing, please check it out.

Thanks and I’ll see you next week.

Genre Fiction from Barry K Gregory and his various pseudonyms Busy, busy this week. I've been working on unplugging the novel bottleneck. I think I mentioned before that you'd probably want to slap me if you knew just how many projects I'm juggling at any one point and time. You'd want to do it twice if you knew how many of those are really close to being finished. I've got a horribly short attention span. I'll write a few chapters on something and I'm having fun, but then I'll see another...

Genre Fiction from Barry K Gregory and his various pseudonyms It's release day for my latest story, Transcription A Tale of Cosmic Horror. Ren Kujawa has hired on for an oral legacy project, transcribing interviews with the residents of a small Wisconsin town that was razed and relocated in the 1970s. The audio files are almost too good, but something is wrong. At first it’s tiny things: strange instructions, files that grow longer after they've been transcribed, details that make no sense,...

Genre Fiction from Barry K Gregory and his various pseudonyms I've been promising a release date on my next novel, Legion, for several weeks now and I'm happy to finally announce it will be available in ebook and paperback on October 12, 2026. I'm still on the fence about whether to offer a pre-order or just drop it live. I've never done a pre-order before. On the verge of retirement, US Marshal Jim Harper chases a fugitive murderer halfway across the Kansas plains before getting his man. But...
